Asma Faizi

President

Asma Faizi is the President of the Afghan Women’s Organization and a lawyer with a diverse background. Asma served as an associate at Torys LLP from 2006 to 2013, where she primarily focused on intellectual property litigation matters involving patents, trademarks, and copyright. For the next ten years she worked at two not-for-profit organizations, which represent the works of hundreds of thousands of Canadian and international writers, artists, songwriters, and publishers. As Senior Counsel and General Counsel, she played an integral role in managing their legal needs.

The sudden takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban in August 2021 and the ensuing humanitarian crisis prompted a reassessment of her career path. In 2023, Asma made the significant decision to shift her focus within the legal field towards immigration and refugee law. Since then, she has established her private practice, where she primarily represents refugee clients.

Asma holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours, with Distinction) in Human Biology, a Master of Science in Pharmacology, and a Juris Doctor degree, all from the University of Toronto. She will be attending Oxford University in September 2024 to pursue a Master of Science in International Human Rights Law.

Asma has received numerous accolades for her Human Rights advocay and professional contributions including the 2022 YWCA Women of Distinctions Award.
